Abstract
Although the importance of empathy has been emphasized in social work education and practice, efforts to theorize and measure the concept of empathy have been scarce. The aim of this study is to validate the Korean version of the Empathy Scale for Social Workers(ESSW), which was developed based upon theories and research findings related to empathy. Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed that the Korean version of the ESSW like its English version is composed of 3 factors(a compassionate contextual assessment, an accepting and attentive collaborative inquiry, and intrinsic helping and emotional support). The Korean version of the ESSW showed high internal consistency reliability asnd satisfactory construct validity. The development of the Korean version of the ESSW would contribute to conducting scientific studies on empathy.
